About Ethereum (ETH)

ETH is the native cryptocurrency of the Ethereum blockchain, a decentralized platform designed to enable smart contracts and decentralized applications (dApps).

Ethereum was proposed by Vitalik Buterin in late 2013 and officially launched in July 2015. As the first blockchain to support programmable contracts, Ethereum laid the foundation for the modern DeFi and NFT ecosystems.

Ethereum originally used a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, similar to Bitcoin. However, in September 2022, it transitioned to Proof-of-Stake (PoS) through a major upgrade known as “The Merge.” This change reduced Ethereum's energy consumption and allowed ETH holders to help secure the network by staking their tokens.
